Can You Buy a Seat Cushion With NDIS Funding? A Guide for Australian Participants

Can You Buy a Seat Cushion With NDIS Funding?

Some Spinely® customers purchase comfort and seating-support products using self-managed or plan-managed NDIS funding. Whether a particular item can be claimed depends on the participant, their disability-related needs, their plan and the current NDIS funding rules.

This guide explains the main pathways, the questions to check before ordering and the documents you may need.

The short answer: A seat cushion or related support may be purchased as low-cost assistive technology when it is an NDIS support, is directly related to the participant’s disability and meets the applicable funding criteria. Plan-managed and self-managed participants can generally purchase from any supplier. NDIA-managed participants must use a registered NDIS provider.

What Is Low-Cost Assistive Technology?

The NDIS describes assistive technology as equipment or a device that helps a participant complete tasks they may otherwise be unable to do because of their disability. Low-cost assistive technology generally costs less than $1,500 and can often be purchased from a store or online without custom manufacture.

A low price alone does not make an item fundable. The product still needs to be an NDIS support, relate directly to the participant’s disability, help with their goals, be safe to use and meet the current funding rules.

Participants should review the official NDIS guidance on low-cost assistive technology and ask their plan manager, support coordinator or NDIS contact if they are unsure.

How Your Plan Is Managed Matters

Self-managed

You can generally purchase an eligible item from any supplier, pay for it and submit a claim through the relevant NDIS participant portal or app. Keep the tax invoice and supporting records.

Plan-managed

You can generally purchase from any supplier. Your plan manager may pay the supplier directly or reimburse the purchase after receiving the invoice and any required documentation.

NDIA-managed

Purchases must be made through a registered NDIS provider. Confirm the supplier’s registration before ordering.

Not sure?

Check the funding section of your plan or contact your plan manager, support coordinator or NDIS contact before making the purchase.

The current purchase process is explained in the official NDIS guide to buying low-cost assistive technology.

What Should You Check Before Ordering?

Every participant’s needs and plan are different. Before purchasing a seating product with NDIS funding, consider the following:

  • Is the product directly related to your disability-related support needs?
  • Will it help you work towards the goals described in your plan?
  • Is the relevant funding available in your plan?
  • Is the product an NDIS support under the current rules?
  • Is it suitable and safe for your intended chair, vehicle or daily activity?
  • Has your allied health professional, plan manager or support coordinator recommended advice before purchase?

Important: Spinely® cannot determine whether an individual purchase will be funded or reimbursed. Approval and eligibility depend on the participant’s circumstances, plan and the NDIS rules in force at the time of purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Spinely® products “NDIS approved”?

The NDIS does not provide a general approval badge for ordinary retail products. Whether an item can be funded depends on the participant’s needs, plan and the current NDIS rules.

Do I need a quote?

Low-cost, low-risk assistive technology will not always require a quote or prior approval, but requirements depend on the plan and item. Confirm with the person who helps manage your funding before ordering.

Can my plan manager pay the invoice?

Plan managers can generally process eligible purchases when they receive the invoice and any documentation they require. Ask your plan manager about their preferred ordering process.

Does purchasing a cushion guarantee reimbursement?

No. Spinely® cannot guarantee that the NDIS or a plan manager will approve or reimburse a purchase.
